Knowledge is power. Travel insurance can protect you and your family when you have a medical emergency. But there is a lot more you can do to keep yourself safe. The Petro-Points Insurance Services Travel Information Centre gives you resources, links and advice to help you inform yourself, travel safe and enjoy your vacation, worry-free.

Choose one of the topics below for more information.

    UNDERSTANDING YOUR TRAVEL INSURANCE POLICY

Understanding your travel insurance policy can help you use it effectively if you have a medical emergency. The first thing you should do is read your policy carefully, and make sure you understand it. It is your responsibility to ensure that you understand the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of your insurance policy. The most important sections to understand are:

    Limitations and Exclusions

This section will tell you what is not covered under your policy.

    Eligibility

This section tells you who is eligible to be covered under the policy.

    Benefits

This section describes what is covered under your policy, including maximum amounts.

Many policies have limitations, waiting periods, or exclusions for pre-existing medical conditions. A pre-existing medical condition is any on-going condition for which you have received medical treatment in the past. If you have a pre-existing condition, you should notify your insurance company and get confirmation in writing that you will be covered for these conditions if you want them covered; otherwise, you might find that a claim resulting from those conditions would not be covered under the policy you purchase.

If there is any part of your policy that is unclear to you, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification. If you have questions about your coverage, contact our customer service centre at 1-800-350-0126 for assistance.

    24-HOUR EMERGENCY TRAVEL ASSISTANCE

Your travel insurance policy includes a 24-hour emergency assistance service that can be accessed worldwide, with a toll-free number or through a collect call.

You should contact the Travel Assistance number listed on your policy as soon as you have a medical emergency. The multilingual staff will initiate a file, so as to monitor your treatment and claims information. They may be able to help you find a hospital or physician in your area, or arrange for transportation to another location, if it is necessary. They can also help explain your coverage details.

To find the emergency Travel Assistance number related to your policy, or to learn more about initiating a claim, visit Claims Information.
